Dealing with a Difficult Passage

When encountering a difficult passage, it often requires digging into the historical, cultural practices of the author's time period.  The very same practice, such as head-covering, in ancient times had a very different meaning than it does today.  The object is to discover the underlying biblical principle being taught and apply it to our contemporary setting.
